Remember when turtlenecks were the stereotypical sartorial choice of the artsy foreign exchange student of questionable sexuality circa 1976?
No? Great! Then you’ll have no problem cozying up with the latest trend.
Turtlenecks. What can you say about them? The mainstream deems them uncool one minute and trendy the next, then back and forth again. I’ve personally always loved them (shout out to my red, pink, and maroon color block number in 7th grade–from The Limited because I was too chic for Limited Too). But with chunky knitwear and retro vibes appearing heavily the past year or so, it should be no surprise that turtlenecks–from the chunky and oversized to the cropped and sleeveless–are having their moment in the sun.

See what I mean? Style Ethics. Style Saint.
Mod and retro are in. (Are they really ever out?). Go for slightly cropped tops with high or mock necks to pair with slim trousers. Or: a simple black turtleneck a la Audrey Hepburn (and Marilyn Monroe, and pretty much every style icon in the last century).
There’s something polished and chic about a high neckline–perhaps because it’s so different from the plunging necklines and bare chests we’re so accustomed to seeing. Chalk this up as a win for modesty and minimalism.
And don’t forget that although it’s summer for most of us, turtlenecks are still possible (take THAT, LA heat). Sleeveless and cropped looks only do more to add that Mod Squad vibe to your outfit.
